On 8th April 2004 saw Ray Liotta make his Broadway debut in a play called “Match.” It opened on 8th April 2004 and ended its run on 23rd May 2004. The Plymouth Theatre in New York was where the play was staged. “Match” was about a husband and wife who arrive on the doorstep of a once renowned dancer to interview him about his past. By the end of the night what they have learned will change them all forever. Ray commented to The Times in November 2003, about his role in the play, and is quoted as saying: “I always seem to play these heavies, but this one is much more emotional.” Starring with Ray Liotta in this play were actors Frank Langella and Jane Adams. “Match” was written by Stephen Belber and directed by Nicholas Martin. One reviewer wrote: Tobi (played by Frank Langella) is visited by Lisa (Jane Adams) and her husband Mike (Ray Liotta). Lisa is conducting research for a dissertation on choreography and dance in America. Soon becomes clear that Lisa and Mike's visit is not what it seems to be with Mike wanting some specific information from Tobi, and is willing to go quite far to get it. While not playing exactly against type, film star Liotta acquits himself quite well in his Broadway debut, he is brooding and menacing with an undercurrent of anger that threatens to erupt at any moment. That unpredictability adds tension to Mike's interactions with Tobi and Jane. The performance is far from one-note, however Liotta also captures the wounded, petulant child within Mike and is responsible for some of the funniest moments in the play. Excerpt from review by Dan Bacalzo, NY. “Match” played 53 regular performances and 28 previews. You can see some photographs that I have come across showing Ray Liotta on stage performing in the play on Broadway, and one from the opening night party. Also the video shows some scenes from the play itself, and this filming was done 'live'.
